I would love for this play to have a second life. If you’re interested, please get in contact with me.&nbsp;
Developed with Support from:&nbsp;
&nbsp;CuriousWorks, National Theatre of Parramatta, Australian plays Transform (APT) (formerly PWA), The Q at The Joan Theatre, and Blacktown Arts Centre.

The project’s presentation at National Theatre of Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre was supported by the Australia Council of the Arts, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body.

Let Me Know When You Get Home“Its miraculously happy ending might make the curmudgeons among us roll their eyes but I, for one, was cheering,” Harriet Cunningham, Sydney Morning Herald.

Let Me Know When You Get Home is my first full length-play. I’d been writing some version of it forever, though I officially started in 2016, as part of the CuriousWorks writer’s group (which I eventually facilitated). After years of play-writing, grant writing, mentorship, producing and all the delicious process that comes with theatre work - it hads its debut in Western Sydney at the Riverside Theatre of Parramatta March 18th - 20th, 2021, as part of National Theatre of Parramatta’s 2020/2021 season.
<img width="1200" height="661" width_o="1200" height_o="661" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8b7c060ed494e4a13793675a27ad5bdabb6be6f4280593b5a9be742f4a60d451/130Let-me-know-when-home_-Riverside-18-Mar-2021_Noni-Carroll-Photography.jpg" data-mid="150127504" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8b7c060ed494e4a13793675a27ad5bdabb6be6f4280593b5a9be742f4a60d451/130Let-me-know-when-home_-Riverside-18-Mar-2021_Noni-Carroll-Photography.jpg" />Let Me Know When You Get Home is about growing up queer in Western Sydney. It’s about suburban isolation, queer joy and friendship, and trying to find your place in the world.&nbsp;
I wrote this work because I spent so much of my teenage years feeling disconnected and isolated, and the process of making the work gave me so many beautiful friendships and connections. How do I even begin to talk about how much everyone who has helped me with this means to me?
How much it means to finally understand what it’s like to work with Filipinix kababayan like Valerie Berry and Gloria Demillo? How much it meant to me that Leila Enright found my play a year after it was meant to have been finished supported by APT (PWA at the time), and championed it for me? Or how invaluable Caitlin Newton-Broad’s mentorship through CuriousWorks kept me going as someone who at that point felt completely disconnected from the theatre world? And that doesn’t begin to cover all the friends, colleagues and mentors who read my work, worked on creative developments with me, gave me feedback, made the work REAL.&nbsp;

<img width="945" height="709" width_o="945" height_o="709" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5c52c65e0e8ea63b281f970fda38e1436d873f689c94e0628e5c10def3c1dec6/161773197_10158023229454849_6772661623686067528_n.jpeg" data-mid="150129839" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/945/i/5c52c65e0e8ea63b281f970fda38e1436d873f689c94e0628e5c10def3c1dec6/161773197_10158023229454849_6772661623686067528_n.jpeg" />
I found out I was non-binary through this work (after five years of writing a non-binary character). I learned I was a writer and a theatre-maker because of this work. I learned to advocate for me and my audiences and what I believe in because I believed in this work.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I will never be grateful enough.
You can read more about the work and its development here.
You can read my Audacity to Expect What I Deserve essay here.
You can read more about the premiere and the audience engagement strategy I worked on for the work&nbsp;here.
I also spoke about the work and it’s processes for the ‘Media Arts Stories: Enabling Communities’ which can be read here.

This is what I wrote for the playwright’s note for its premiere:

Growing up queer, Filipinx and isolated, it never helped me to hear adults say that 'it gets better.' I didn’t want to wait until I escaped the suburbs and was able to move to Sydney, Melbourne, San Francisco or some other seemingly mythical queer utopia. I just wanted to feel less lonely.

I wrote Let Me Know When You Get Home as a coming-of-age story for young folks that understands how out-of-reach 'escaping' your racist, homophobic and transphobic community can be. I wanted a work that didn’t say, ‘it gets better,’ but instead tells young people, ‘I know it sucks right now, so I’m going to stay here with you.’

So, for every queer person who has been told they need to ‘escape’ Western Sydney: I wrote this for you, no matter whether you left, stayed, or came back. Everyone deserves to feel safe, loved and accepted. I hope this work feels like home to you.

I started working with Shawn Spina on Prone to the Drone when it was just a funny anecdote about a drone flying into his backyard. Slowly the idea grew into the short film it is today: a melancholy comedy about mental health, masculinity, isolation, and finding absurdity and humor in the darkest moments.&nbsp;
Prone the Drone was my first film credit as a Producer. I gave him feedback writing the script through the CuriousWorks writer’s group, I assisted in sending through the Screenability 2019 grant, and produced the short film with mentorship from Vanessa Hyde.&nbsp;

Prone to the Drone premiered at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival, and toured with the Travelling Film Festival across regional NSW. It has been selected by the Dumbo Film Festival, Canberra Mental Health Film Festival, Wide Angle Film Festival, and was awarded an Award of Commendation by Canada Shorts.&nbsp; It was also screened at MCA’s 2019 Art is for Everyone Weekend, the 2019 Arts Activated Conference,&nbsp; as well as the 2019 Hume Housing AGM.&nbsp;

In 2020, Prone to the Drone was part of ABC iView’s International Day of People with Disability digital collection

What do our bedrooms say about us?
What does your house become when it’s the only place you can be?
Did people collect pop vinyls during the Spanish Flu?

Make Yourself at Home is a time-capsule of 2020 - an interactive experience where you explore a house, interacting with the objects and environment throughout to reveal snippets of the residents' lives.

It combines 360 degree photography, video, audio, and a host of online services to recreate the experiences and emotions of the artists in quarantine.

Grab some headphones, get cozy with a hot drink, and Make Yourself at Home - now online here.

Created collaboratively by the CuriousWorks Makers Space artists.

In April 2020, I and the other Makers Space artists began meeting virtually to work on what would become Make Yourself At Home. We dropped 360 cameras to one another’s mailboxes, had long D&amp;M’s over Zoom and other online chats, and shared our experiences with quarantine, social isolation and general 2020-ness through the process of this work.

The project was created collaboratively, with certain aspects created by specific creators. I wrote an online quiz entitled, “Am I a gender or a bag of meat?” based on my experiences dealing with mental health and gender identity during quarantine. It was inspired by the personality quizzes in teen girl magazines, and the way they’re often parodied on sites like Reductress or Clickhole.

<img width="963" height="722" width_o="963" height_o="722" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0a74c2fe62f7b213de5ccf37d09971b1020eed168438e25a09df46591f93aef8/screencapture-quiz-tryinteract-2021-05-16-13_47_23.png" data-mid="108570701" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/963/i/0a74c2fe62f7b213de5ccf37d09971b1020eed168438e25a09df46591f93aef8/screencapture-quiz-tryinteract-2021-05-16-13_47_23.png" />
“Am I a gender or a bag of meat” was my first foray into writing about my gender, and was one of my first steps in making sense of where I fit in the gender spectrum. I wouldn’t have shared this work if it wasn’t for the safe, welcoming artistic space provided by everyone in Makers Space.
Creating this work with the Makers Space group helped me get through the year.
In 2025, the quiz had to be moved from its original website and was reformatted into more of a teen girl magazine layout. You can just read the quiz here.

	“We wrote this for the brown folks in the room. Are you tired of all the emotional labour you go through on a day-to-day basis? Are you sick of having to be someone’s teacher, therapist and mother all in one? Are you tired of white people asking you to fix them without any regard for your own hurt and trauma? Enter Salt Baby. The story of Salt Baby asks: what if we could actually get paid for all the racist bullshit we deal with every day?”
Salt Baby is a new theatre work in progress.

	Salt Baby
Salt Baby was initially developed in the Filipinx Writers Room (now Ka-llective) that was formed during the 2020 pandemic and supported by the NSW Government through CreateNSW.
We started writing it online, having not worked together before, only having met in person twice before the pandemic hit. We didn’t know what we wanted to make. We just knew we wanted to work together and make truly great Filipinx work.
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/ePZD5r3Iei88gJEKXLKLdOztgnW9Hmemv-dbPYSMImEuHiMrnktcIQuHuPtx2AIrofT8xiF0ScbGfUaFzHMsMjFhTRmBp87wGwOU8NdroFlAsRHe7ktUVxnPdlfhaBBwwE811_BB" width="563" height="357" style="width: 405.762px; height: 257.295px;">

We’ve poured into this work our passion, our politics, our multi-faceted talents, our rage, our humour, our love, and we’re not done.

The world is not ready for our baby, Salt Baby.

Miranda Aguilar (they/them1) is a queer, Filipinx writer, creative producer and community arts worker2.
They write for stage, screen and beyond, and support emerging artists and story-tellers through their day job at CuriousWorks.
They are a proud member of Ka-llective,
a Sydney-based collective of Asian-Australian creatives from multiple disciplines.
In 2023, they were part of the UNTAPPED Development Lab, presented by Screen Australia and Australians in Film.
In 2022, they were a part of the AFTRS National Talent Camp, and the Co-Curious Bright Side writing program as part of the Netflix Fund for Creativity.

They
write scripts and stories for soft-spoken brown weirdoes, spicy gay nerds, and
hopeful pessimists.&nbsp;

In an increasingly disconnected and unempathetic
world, their work cracks open an audience's brittle shell, releasing a tidal wave
of emotion, laughter, tears - everything simmering under the surface and
dredged up from the depths.

Occasionally, they like to write about something hopeful and send it directly to your inbox. Because you deserve something nice once in a while, As A Treat.
If you need a more formal bio, here’s the ~100ish-word application/grant/etc-appropriate version:

When You Get Home’, their first full-length play. They are a member of

developing their first theatre work, Salt Baby. Their work has been previously supported

among others. In 2023, they were selected for the Screen Australia and Australian’s in Film UNTAPPED 2023 Development Lab for their work-in-development, Courting Ghosts.&nbsp; &nbsp;In 2022, they were a part of the AFTRS National Talent Camp, and the Co-Curious Bright Side writing program as part of the Netflix Fund for Creativity. You might notice this site has some pages in progress/links to other websites instead of individual pages. This was on purpose. Life is a work-in-progress. They have chosen to chill out about this, and update this when they have time.3&nbsp; They hope you will do the same.
